Washer Dryers: The New Status Symbol?

Washing machines and tumble dryers have long been considered (or at least argued) as essential home appliances but some changes are occurring which might just transform the machines into symbols of status. Let me elaborate...

In Manhattan, the majority of apartments do not come with washer dryers. In fact, only around 20% of them do, forcing many New Yorkers to travel to their local Laundromat to get their dirty laundry smelling and looking fresh again. But landlords have finally realised that apartments featuring these machines can add up to around five % to its price tag. More upmarket apartments actually come with their own "on-suite" room for laundry and this means that you don't even have to share with the other people living in the building!

Whirlpool also recently created washers and dryers that make cheaper washing machines look really technologically dated. An LCD touch screen and a USB port features on this new appliance. This port doesn't enable you to play music or view images (so there's the mobile iPod range is still a more desirable consumer good!) but instead, allows the user to upgrade the machine with new setting and washing cycles as Whirlpool comes up with them. The entire machine just has one button as all requests can be made via the touch screen.

The cost of these washer dryers is just under the $2,000 threshold so they really are for the wealthy trend setters market! It is important to note that the washer and dryer are sold as separate entities so the duo will cause a $4,000 dent.
